What is Measles?

Measles is one of the most contagious diseases known to humans. It's a viral infection that spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Before the measles vaccine was introduced in 1963, major epidemics occurred every 2-3 years, causing an estimated 2.6 million deaths annually worldwide.

Symptoms

  • Early stage β€” High fever (often rising above 104Β°F / 40Β°C), lasting 4-7 days
  • Early stage β€” Persistent dry cough, runny nose (coryza), and sneezing
  • Early stage β€” Red, watery, and light-sensitive eyes (conjunctivitis)
  • Early stage β€” Koplik spots: tiny bluish-white spots inside the cheeks, appearing 1-2 days before the rash
  • Early stage β€” General malaise, loss of appetite, and fatigue
  • Late stage β€” Red, blotchy maculopapular rash starting at the hairline and face
  • Late stage β€” Rash spreads downward to the neck, trunk, arms, and legs over 3-4 days
  • Late stage β€” Rash spots may merge into large confluent patches
  • Late stage β€” Fever often spikes higher as the rash peaks, then gradually subsides
  • Possible complications β€” Ear infections, pneumonia, diarrhea, encephalitis (rare but serious)

Transmission

Measles spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can remain airborne and infectious for up to 2 hours in an enclosed space. It is one of the most contagious diseases known, with 90% of non-immune individuals becoming infected after exposure.

Contagious Period: 4 days before to 4 days after rash appears

Prevention

  • MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) vaccine - 97% effective after 2 doses
  • Isolation of infected individuals
  • Post-exposure prophylaxis within 72 hours of exposure
  • Immune globulin for high-risk individuals
  • Maintaining high vaccination coverage (95%+) for herd immunity

Health officials issued a public alert Friday after confirming a measles case involving a traveller who was aboard Biman Bangladesh Airlines Flight BG305 from Bangladesh to Toronto via Rome and Air Canada Flight AC1986 from Toronto to Moncton on July 7. The exposure also includes Terminal 3 and Terminal 1 at Toronto Pearson International Airport in Mississauga between 1:11 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. ET, meaning thousands of travellers passing through Canada's busiest airport during that time could have been exposed. Because the flights originated overseas and continued on to Atlantic Canada, the advisory could affect travellers from across Ontario and other parts of Canada who were at Pearson that day. Peel Public Health is urging anyone who may have been exposed to check that they and their fami...
